I am a card carrying, bleeding heart, Democrat Liberal.
If I wanted to move to another country, say Canada, I'd have to prove to them I have something to offer. Not a bad idea.
When my grandpa came from Italy in 1912 at age 19, he had a job lined up in a factory. He couldn't get in without sponsorship and that job. I have copies of the Ellis Island page he signed stating his older brother had a place for him to live, and would take responsibility for him. He worked hard all his life, never took welfare, never owned a car or had a license.. but before he died he said it was all worth it because now his children and grandchildren were Americans by birth.
I am all for the melting pot. What I cannot stand is when people enter our country illegally and then get the same rights my grandfather worked so hard to earn for me legally. It is just plain wrong to give education, health benefits, and other rights to those who break the law to be here in the first place. I understand that there are many women who literally risk their lives to have children here, so that their children may be citizens. Once that happens, we have to let the parents stay as well. I say any child born in the US to legal parents is a legal citizen of this country. If they are born here to illegal parents, they can go home with them. Otherwise, then if we must keep the children, who have no guilt in this issue, then they should go to foster care/ adoption... and the parents should be sent home. That would stop that situation from happening swiftly. I feel mean and cruel for even saying that, but the fact is, if the only answer to breaking our laws is to reward someone with all the rights they do not deserve, then our country is in more trouble than we know.
Off my soapbox.

(1) I don’t know what gives you the impression that “liberals love immigrants”. There is nothing particular about immigrants to love. Why should I love them? I live in NY City which is a very liberal place and most of my friends are libs. Our city is loaded with immigrants [illegal and legal]. I’ve never heard anybody here say “I love immigrants” or “isn’t it great that we have so many immigrants here?”. immigrants are just here and doing their thing. We don’t love them and we don’t hate them. They’re just here. (2) Nobody really expressed hostility toward immigrants until the Great Recession set in and immigrants were seen as taking our jobs. When the economy becomes strong again people will ignore immigrants again. I know that in southern states however, people have been complaining about illegals for a long time because they commit crime and there are far too many of them down there. It’s a different world.

1) That immigration was a problem and the system needed to be fixed has been obvious for over a decade.
2) During all that time until thils January, the GOP Congress did nothing to fix the problem
3) Bush just presented a conservative immigration reform bill--which the right-wing in Congress defeated
4) In the process, these fake "patriots" on the right have left our border unsecured in an era of international terrorism
5) As a result of 1-4, in 2009 we WILL get an immigration reform bill--but a far more liberal one
6) And the cos can just shut up if they don't like that--they've had every chance to fix the problem and didn't

As a liberal, I am actually for cracking down on illegals. I believe there needs to be a fence or wall along the borders. Also, I believe we need to crack down on illegals already here. Yes, people say that they work jobs that Americans won't, but personally I have not been allowed to apply for some jobs because I don't speak Spanish. So, isn't that taking away jobs from Americans too?

I'm a liberal and the illegals need to jump the fence and head back to Mexico and stay there. Being liberal doesn't make me happy to be forced to learn Spanish, pay for the anchor babies that illegals are cranking out, watch them break the rules and then demand Constitution rights. Hell amigos, it's not your Constitution. Illegals get paid under the table and send their money back to their relatives and contribute nothing to this country except cheap labor for wealthy and greedy Americans. Liberal doesn't mean we all want to give things to freeloaders and sit around a campfire singing.

I'm not a Liberal, but I do know that most liberals are for giving green cards and work visas to illegal immigrants. George Bush had the right idea of voting against such a plan. Yes, America is the land of opportunity, but we can't afford to give illegals citizenship when it will hurt the economy. Americans would get less pay, less social security, less pensions, etc. Also, it is unfair for other people all over the world who wait years to get in to this country.

I am a liberal and I am all for getting the illegal out of here. I think we need to keep the distinction between legal and illegal aliens though, legal did it right and deserve to stay Illegals need do go. I also believe that we have much bigger problems than illegal immigration and it's a smoke screen.

They think the more immigrants that they get, the more votes they get, and the way I see it, that is how I believe they view the immigration issue, they only care about the volume of the votes.
Although a great majority of immigrants do not vote at all, so they may have to import millions for each vote they wish to receive, and with that in mind, they may have to continue to stall legislation that would build a wall to protect us from illegal immigration by building walls to stop the illegal flow of people, and drugs entering our country.
So long as the flood gates remain open, then just like fresh water which is being polluted by industrial waste, where the water is being infused with toxic elements, then like the water, our society is being infused with toxic elements, which will ultimately destroy every single value which our nation was founded upon, and which we have sworn to protect.
Once the population of Mexico resides in United States Boarders, then this will no longer be the United States of America, but it will be the United States of Mexico, and all who were once true Americans will be the Minority.
Government will change even more dramatically then we have ever observed it before, and the results will be devastating for Americans.
Any way by the time the Liberals realize this simple truth, it will then be to late for them to affect change, because they will then be powerless, and living with there consequences or, not living at all.
Also building a wall for protection, cannot in any way be compared to Communism, in which communists had to build walls to keep people inside there boarders, and they would shoot there people for trying to escape.
Think about this for one moment, if you built a home, and placed doorway openings on every wall, but you do not mount doors upon the hinges, would you like to live in your home?
You would never know who was going to be sleeping in your bed, or your children's bed, or who was going to be using your tooth brush, or eating your food, or assaulting your person, and you would loose all sense of self identity, which is what makes you special, and different.
In your home you have the right and responsibility to erect doors to keep people out, and in the same manor, our government has not placed the doors of our society upon its hinges, and it is drastically affecting adverse changes upon us.
And according to the constitution of the United States of America, it is the duty of our Government to defend, and protect our boarders from attack, and invaders, and that my friends is one of the most very basic reasons for which you pay taxes.

One Mexican at a time, lol. No just kidding, that is a good question, heck I'd like for the Conservatives to come up with a plan that most could get behind, you know the Liberals can't.

"Liberals" is probably too broad a category for any one answer to be 100% correct. That said, most of the liberals I know (including me) oppose extreme measures such as mass deportation or building a wall (shades of Communist Berlin, with that one). Bush's plan to give illegals qualified amnesty, the way Reagan did, is one of the few things he's suggested that I liked--they would have to pay a steep fine to help make up for any monetary burden they've put on the country, but the infrastructure wouldn't be severely compromised.
