To be completely honest(but not wishing to hurt anyones feelings), it's not so much the length but the thickness. Anywhere between 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 is good, any larger and a woman's cervix becomes hurt(without going into details).
But of course, that is just my opinion, other women will also have their own which may differ.

If size doesn't matter, as you implied with the second half of your question, then there wouldn't be a "preferred" size as you asked.
