I'm figuring you mean animal-to-human transmission? Most people don't worry too much about animal diseases unless they affect people. Well, if the disease is carried by pets, then regular check-ups and prompt treatment usually do the trick. Wild animal-to-human transmission is much harder to control in these days of habitat destruction, bush-meat and increasing spread of people into formerly undisturbed areas. Generally the response is reactive - when an outbreak occurs, try to stamp it out quickly before it spreads too far into the human population and causes an epidemic. Otherwise, there aren't too many really good options. Vaccination would help, if it's a stable disease that can be vaccinated against, but of course you can't really vaccinate the animal host - look how hard it is just to try to vaccinate human groups!

To prevent the introduction and dissemination of animal diseases as far as possible, owners of animals must (among other things):

Do their best to keep animal diseases out of their business;
Ensure adequate hygiene;
Be alert to symptoms of disease;
Comply with requirements when importing animals from other countries;
Notify a vet of any suspected animal disease.
When there is an increased risk of infectious animal diseases entering the country, more stringent supervision of animal transports is applied. These measures can be at farm or national level (e.g. a ban on imports from infected countries).

The usual disease of dogs/cats are mites (scabies) and fleas(these insects' bites are very itchy). There are over the counter medications and treatment is easy. You may ask your veterinarian or doctor about it. Proper sanitation is the best prevention of animal related diseases such as the cleaning and disinfecting of kitchens and bathrooms to avoid rats and roaches. For chicken/avian flu, report any bird or fowl that exhibits the symptoms of this disease to a local official. Also maintain a healthy body to avoid all kinds of diseases, ok!

Not trying to be rude, but people having sex with animals have resulted in sexually transmitted disease. Chimps and bats have also been accused of helping the spread of AIDS from their guano and their meat. That also goes for rats spreading the bubonic plague.
