When I am on my period, I am always cheerful. I'm not moody at all and always in a good mood. But yes I still cramp really bad. But during the three weeks I'm not on my period, I am extremely bitchy and moody. I feel down during that time also and don't want to be around anyone. Isn't this backwards? Is this something I should see a doctor about?

I have something called PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). It's a very very severe form of PMS that normally requires medical attention especially if it interferes with daily life, as mine does.

I had a severe case of PPD(postpartum depression) after my daughter was born, and soon after being dx'd with the PPD I was dx'd with PMDD. I was on so many meds for the PPD, however, NONE of those meds touched the PMDD, not in my case. It was a nightmare of a time. I was suicidal every month, and I would lash out at my kids. It was horrid.

Here is an article about my personal experience...

And, here is some major info regarding PMDD...

I take Yaz birth control pill for the PMDD, and have found it to be successful in alleviating the PMDD symptoms. I started taking it back in October, and it has literally saved my life. I no longer take any other meds... except for the occasional Ativan.

Talk to your gyn or PCP about this. If I'm completely wrong about what you are talking about, I apologize.

I wish you all the best.

You may have premenstrual tension syndrome otherwise called PMS. This is a condition which occurs during the time you have no menstruation or for some women, one to two weeks before menstruation. The cause in unknown but some hypothesize that it may be due to hormonal fluctuations. Symptoms vary from breast tenderness to nausea to anger and irritability. Treatment: exercise, vitamin B complex and avoidance of caffeine.

I've never had this happen to me but it does sound like a hormone imbalance could be going on. I would recommend seeing your doctor to have them evaluate the situation further to see what they think could be going on.
