A woman's menstrual cycle is affected by hormones released not only by the ovaries but also by hormones released by the brain specifically the hypothalamus. When these stimulating hormones released by the brain is decreased in amount, ovaries release lesser hormones, causing decrease in menstrual amount, irregular menstrual cycle of even period delays. Stress in the form of exercise for example may affect the release of these stimulating hormones, causing a decrease in ovarian hormones, which in turn delays period.
