The purchase of Alaska in 1867! This is one of my favorite tidbits of information because back then, people thought Seward was an asss for making such a stupid purchase. What those critics later realized that the purchase paid itself when it was discovered that Alaska contained a massive oil reserve that made a fortune for the US. Talk about irony!
