I don't know if we can really tell you what's good or bad to buy, it greatly depends on whether you have a meal plan and will be eating in the cafeteria all the time or if you're going to be living out of the fridge because that's all you have.

How well you will eat also depends on how much money you have. If you want to eat better than bare bones things like ramen noodles and macaroni and cheese, you need to have the money for that.

You don't say if you are a meat eater or a vegetarian. I'm going to assume you eat meat but this advice can be tailored to suit your normal diet.

Establish a base for your kitchen pantry - bread, milk, butter, eggs, potatoes, cheese, onions, any other fruits and vegetables you like. These things you will eat everyday regardless.

Remember, fresh food isn't meant to last forever, so you might find yourself buying too much at first.

When I attended Uni - I got together with 5 others and made a pot of minced beef (my own speciality) and we would split up our portions (each person made something they were particularly good at). We made our food with the intention of freezing it and defrosting a pack each morning for the evening meal. This gave us some variety and we soon discovered other tastes. When defrosted - we ate in our own particular homes and had our own veggies with the packed meal.

Remember if you are doing this, to budget for the little food trays that will hold your food - we all clubbed together and bought disposable plastic food trays in bulk - I still have about 30 - but they are quite useful for other things (be creative).

That allowed me to budget my finances and have a nice treat once a week - maybe take-away or pizza with friends.

You are going to be a student, you will find your own tastes - just steer away from eating fast-food every day - coz it tends to be filled with lots of c r a p like MSG and salt - if you make it yourself, you know what you are eating. Fast food once in a while is often enough.

Eat lots of veggies, clean your teeth and behave!

OH! One more point - you might need a padlock or a cattle prod to stop some of your fellow students (who haven't planned as well as you have) from nicking your food

I recommend canned and dried foods (I can't even begin to describe how much fresh food rotted away in my dorm room). My personal list would include:

Canned veggies
Ramen
Easy Mac
Canned soup
Apple sauce
Assorted soda

You need things that are simple because we college students are lazy! :)
Peanut butter and Jelly of course (don't forget bread)
Frozen dinners (Lean cuisines are pretty good)
Cold-cuts
Mac and cheese (got easy packs)
RAMEN (the ultimate food for dorming students across the world)
Milk, Juice, soda (your choice)
Cereal (good for breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
Snacks (chips, pretzels, etc.)
Icecream :) yum (good for late nite cravings)
