The people of New Orleans did go to shelters, but they were badly damaged during the Katrina, then once the shelters released them after the hurricane, it was hell. They needed help down there, and it took Bush a week while people were dying and getting raped. Not everyone can afford to leave the city. It would seem to me that americans would care more about their own people here in the country than people 2,000 miles away. There were even people in hospitals and special homes that couldnt leave New Orleans, ...stop calling them ignorant because they couldnt take a trip to Atlanta or whatever during Katrina.
I'm pro american ...and I believe the american people come first and new orleans is a part of america
If you're pro american then you'd feel sorry for the victims and families of new orleans instead of calling them stupid just because it made Bush look bad for taking a week to send help.

See this is what I mean, bush supporters are not going to admit that it took him way too long to send help. People could say that you shouldnt build houses in California because of earthquakes but if a huge one hit california, the president should rush to come to the assistant of his american people.
By the way, some people who may have been elderly or sick could not leave new orleans.
But just call them all stupid and lets continue to do operation iraqi freedom 2000 miles away. But you know what, people living in other cities in Lousiana saw what happened and how it was handled. I wouldnt be surprised if LA is blue state in 2008. Because some people who may not have lived directly in New Orleans had businesses in New Orleans that tanked r maybe they had relatives who lived there. Bush should have and could have acted faster but dont worry, 2008 it will be all over. Even if its Guliani, its better than bush.

Many many people in New Orleans would have been ecstatic to have been helped in a week. Many many waited months and months and still no help came from the government, just organizations. Bush is a failure and everything he does causes irreparable harm. He didn't and doesn't care about the people of New Orleans. Their lives will never be the same and so many of them are still homeless.
Of course you know what Barbara Bush's comment was. "Those people were lucky to have Katrina. They have never lived this good before." Guess that where Bush got his empathy.

Those people who 'couldn't afford to leave' would have been able to had the Mayor not let the City's buses sit still in their parking garages instead of following their established evacuation plan. Blaming Bush for Katrina is totally ridiculous, and most people seem to understand that. The President can't send aid until it's requested by the state govt, and the minute it was requested he dispatched it.
The Federal govt. (including inspectors under the Bush administration) told them their levies wouldn't hold and they needed to upgrade them. They told them that for DECADES, and they did nothing but embezzle the funds that were earmarked to do the job. Notice how all the other cities hit by the hurricane have recovered very quickly, but New Orleans is still in shambles? It's not a coincidence.
If anyone should be ashamed it's the people of New Orleans for re-electing the guy who really failed their city, the Mayor.

I don't think the people of New Orleans were stupid.
Their city government didn't do enough prior to nor in the aftermath of Katrina.
If you've ever been to New Orleans and understand it's geography and topography, you'd see it was a real logistical nightmare getting anything in there to help.
Quit blaming Bush.
EDIT - Since you're so quick to defend the incompetence of state and municipal government in Louisiana.
Let me give you a hypothetical. You are Ray Nagin. You know very well a major storm is headed your way. You know very well the levees which keep your city dry were not built up as the Army Corps of Engineers had suggested decades earlier for political reasons.
Do you A) Ask for federal assistance 3-5 days in advance of the storm knowing the logistical issues you have, or B)Wait until just about the time the storm hits to evacuate/ask for help, or C) Sit around and wait for FEMA to just "show up".
Nagin chose somewhere between B and C.
I absolutely feel sorry for Katrina victims and have donated money to them. I feel even more sorry they have such poor leadership down there.
Many people evacuated to Houston and have never gone back, nor will they.
Contrast New Orleans with Biloxi, Mississippi, ostensibly hit just as hard by Katrina. You didn't hear one tidbit about them whining over the time it took FEMA to get to them, did you? That's because they and their city government handled it. Period.

Ruby,
Come on now.
A huge hurricane is coming. The town evacuates. The Mayor says to. People ON THE NEWS stand around and brag how "they've been through hurricanes and they'll just ride this out". The busses were running all week FOR FREE.
But let's just say for arguments sake that you can't get out.
It's KNOWN that EVERYONE should be prepared to be without food, water or shelter for AT LEAST 48 hours in the event of an emergency. That includes anything from the power going out, to a hurricane, to a nuclear bomb going off.
Hospitals DID move their patients to safer grounds. You are SO ignorant on how an evacuation works, it's pathetic that yo continue to show the world how LITTLE you know.
Finally, cut the rhetoric. I didn't call them ignorant, and I didn't call them stupid. And it's not that I don't feel sorry for them - I feel bad for anyone displaced in ANY catastrophic event.
Don't question my patriotism when you're blaming Bush for people in the streets looting and being raped. Criminal activity a thousand miles away isn't his doing.
Or are you blaming the hurricane on Bush too?

Don't make excuses for their mayor. That just proves that you're letting ignorance play the largest role in your opinion.
Bush did more than enough to help them, and far more than the mayor or any of the other leaders of the city did. This is something that you shouldn't even think to blame Bush for. I'm not a hypocrite for believing that the people in charge over New Orleans and the people of the city themselves failed to stand up and come to conclusion on how to resolve their tragic problem.

Afraid not here Ruby, they would rather kill our young people in the desert over lies at 250,000 dollars a minute, than they would face the truth of what happened down here.
They cannot fathom what it was like and "Good Job Brownie" was in Baton Rouge prepping for his photo op and e-mailing his aide as to where he wanted dinner reservations. People had been with out drinking water for 2 days.
You people who criticize knowing for 2 weeks that it was coming have no idea what you're talking about, three days before land fall all of the models had it going ashore in Alabama or Florida, you have no idea what it takes financially to evacuate for 2 or 3 days much less 2 weeks, the best off among us cannot quit their jobs everytime a hurricane comes into the Gulf of Mexico, we still have to work and function. My brother in law was in traffic 11 hours to go 120 miles, you literally can't get everybody out, look at what would have happened in Houston had Rita hit there, people would have been killed on the highway because it was a gridlock. My son treated a man at the hospital that walked from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. It is not as simple as you all think.
Please don't mistake I know full well that the Mayor of New Orleans our chocolate Mayor is an idiot and has plenty of blame, as does our democratic governor, she is an idiot as well, but the federal government sat on their hands while people were dying, there is plenty of blame no doubt, but if you have not experienced it and I hope that you never do, it is an awful situation.

Yes I agree the able bodied ones could have "walked" as some had stated.
What people forget is that there were ALOT of elderly people and mothers with young children. What were these people to do? Especially if they were low income.
I couldn't imagine trying to get out of a hurricane's path with several young children in tow, walking! I understand these women made a choice to have these kids but come on.
Most of the elderly of low income had no one to help them.
Asshat McPoop - Several usable buses were locked up in a storage yard!! This was all over the front page of most newspapers.

probably some in the two camps are hypocrites. That stated, right this is how i'd be anti-war and professional-troops. i'm pleased with what the *infantrymen* are doing, not the protection stress. How? i'm proud that they have been brave adequate to connect the protection stress interior the 1st place. i'm proud that they are keen to threat their lives and to maintain on with the orders of their leaders. even inspite of the indisputable fact that I disagree with a lot of those orders, that may not the troop's fault. the warriors have given up better than maximum individuals can think of for our u . s . a .--how can we not be pleased with that, in spite of each BREATH we condemn the silly reasoning that has asked our infantrymen to do exactly that for a rustic that did not attack us and is now embroiled in a civil war?

I'm pro American but here's the thing IT'S NOT LIKE THE PEOPLE DIDN'T KNOW THE HURRICANE WAS COMING!!!! I'M QUITE SURE IT HAD MORE LOCAL COVERAGE THAN IT HAD ON THE WEATHER CHANNEL. THOSE PEOPLE HAD ABOUT 2 WEEKS TO PREPARE, AND THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS DIDN'T DO ENOUGH. Quit whining that Bush didn't do enough. What more could he have done? FEMA got there as quickly as possible. Of course there was mismanagement. You try to coordinate such a huge relief effort, as well as deal with everything else that was going on and then we'll see how successful you are. And we can all play Monday morning quarterback and second guess your every decision!

Okay, in defense of Bush taking a week to get there. Okay, Bill Clinton responded to a hurricane, can't remember which one, immediately and was criticized for making tragedy a political issue. He visited another town after a hurricane later in his term a week later, and was criticized for not showing compassion.
It seems like a President can't show up to a natural disaster like that at any point in time after it happens without being criticized for it. Similar thing happened with Bush Sr. And I was to young to remember anything like that with Ronald Regan, but it might have happened.
