Hi there! I'm 38 and moved to Chicago three years ago. It was hard for me to leave my friends, too. I had lived in Portland OR for ten years and had made a lot of wonderful friends.

Now, after three years, I am beginning to have some wonderful friendships here in Chicago and I don't want to leave. At this point in life I have friends who are all over the world. The reality is that after high school, people tend to scatter. You'll be surprised by who stays in your life and who goes. I think your mom has a good point about diversity in the community, too.

The three year rule always works best with moving. During the second year, things become easier and by the third year you usually have some deep-rooted friendships. Also, you should go back to visit your friends in Mentor occasionally and have some friends out to Berkeley, too. Showing your old friends around your new world might help you to realize how much you appreciate your new life - I know that's what helped me! Who knows, maybe you'll convince some of them to join you at Berkeley for college.

Good luck and hope you can get over those lonelies!

10th grade huh? Well, I have news for ya buckaroo...you are waaaay ahead of the game. Berkeley will make you far more open minded than you ever would have become back in Mentor. You "will" make new friends and you will be exposed to more of the world, which is more important. Just do one thing for yourself...don't forget that Berkeley is full of left wing self-rightous pseudo-intellectuals who'll try to convince you that communism is the way things should be...don't listen to them.

No, really, you'll be amazed at how much of the world you'll learn while in Berkeley. Open your mind and you'll find how small the town you raised will become...I know, my home town had a population of 3000...I've spent the last 32 years travelling around the world and when I go back to my home town I'm always amazed at how narrow the streets have become. Have faith in your mom.
