Yes it does mean "godmother" in the Southwestern dialects of German. It's pronounced with a "t", not a "th" sound.
The word is presumably derived from the custom that a child was held before god ("gott helt" in medieval Southern German) at baptism by the godparent.

RE:
What is the meaning and origin of "Gothel"?
I only read this word some time ago and that it means "godmother" in a European language. I haven't come across any good sources yet, so I'd highly appreciate the help. Cheers.

Origins means that they got into the life of each character in X Men. The Wolverine movie went into the life of Wolverine and how he became Wolverine. If they did a origin for another X Men character it would be a lot like the Wolverine movie just going into the life of the character and how they became who they are with X Men and with their own powers. Also at the end of Wolverine movie it shows how some of the X Men characters first started out like Scott when he was real young and first using his powers.

I think this comes from the story of Rapunzel by Brothers
Grimm 1812. Mother Gothel is the evil witch that steals
Rapunzel and takes her to the forest/tower. It's a German
story and the word is (I believe) a given name rather than
a title such as godmother.

A childless couple who wanted a child lived next to a walled
garden which belonged to an enchantress. The wife, at long
last pregnant, noticed some rapunzel (or, in some versions
of the story, blue radishes), planted in the garden and
longed after it to the point of death. For two nights, the
husband went out and broke into the witch's garden to gather
some for her, but on the third night, as he was scaling the
wall to return home, the enchantress (Dame Gothel) appeared
and accused him of thievery. He begged for mercy, and the
old woman agreed to give him some, on condition that the
child his wife was pregnant with be surrendered to her at
birth. Desperate, the man agreed; a girl was born; the
enchantress appeared, and the child was taken away. She
named her Rapunzel.
The witch is called "Mother Gothel", a common term for a
godmother in German. She features as the overprotective
parent, and interpretations often differ on how negatively
she is to be regarded.
Folkloric beliefs often regarded it as quite dangerous to
deny a pregnant woman any food she craved. Family members
would often go to great lengths to secure such cravings.
