I like Brazos Bend State Park. It is about an hour from downtown on 59 south. Take the Grand Parkway, FM99 exit. (I think it is even still named Brazos Bend State Park.) Unless you are trying to see stars or planets that are northeast over Houston, which has the light pollution that you are trying to escape.

Gordon had the best answer, Brazos Bend State Park.

They do have an observatory. It used to be that if you went on the weekends there would lots of telescope enthusiasts out on the top landing of the observatory and they would be looking at different stars and constellations. They were a really great crowd that would let you take a look through thier telescope and tell you a bit about what they were looking at that night.

It's a great place!

Due to the pollution (light and otherwise) that is prevelant in and around Houston, I'd say you'd have to go at least an hour outside of the city to see stars clearly.

Maybe Victoria, Beaumont or College Station? Somewhere with as little light pollution as possible.

Hope this helps!

You could probably drive due north of the city and get to a dark place faster than any other direction. Also, the west end of galveston isn't too terribly light polluted, and there are no lights over the ocean, so that helps the stars to be visible.

Some nights you can go into Memorial Park and see them pretty clearly.

Gordon's answer about Brazos Bend is a good one. They also have an observatory.
