Education.
Work more or get a higher paying job through better education.

It depends upon many factors. If they live in the United States, there are resources available to help them succeed. Education, Job Corps, Welfare to Work programs to name a few. Some people start their own business with seed money and become very successful and financially well off. America is still the land of opportunity. It takes hard work, but it is well worth it.

Career training...office assistant, medical assistance, paralegal, etc. Those things that require certification but not a college degree. The programs usually take less than 2 years and are not as expensive as colleges. Borrow the tuition money from a loan/family member/good samaritan and get out into the work force newly cerfitied.

look for a job in the community. dont go for the best job at first because u wont have everything they need. try looking on seek.com or other job sites, if that doesnt work try working a few part time or casual jobs if worse comes to worse.... busking
