well a salt formed between a strong acid and a weak base is an acidic salt, for example NH4Cl. A salt formed between a weak acid and a strong base is a basic salt, for example NaCH3COO. An acidic salt will disssolve in H2O to give an acidic solution due to the presence of H+ ions.

example:

NH4Cl (s) + H2O (l) ------- NH4+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)
NH4+ (aq) + H2O (l) ------------- NH3 (aq) + H3O+(aq)
H3O+ (aq) ---------- H2O(l) + H+(aq)

A basic salt will dissolve in water to give a basic solution due to the presence of OH- ions.

For example:

NaAc = Na+ + Ac-

H2O + Ac- = HAc + OH-

Acid salts are those derived from acids which originally contained more than one H, and not all the H has been replaced by a metal. Examples are NaHCO3 and NaHSO4.

Basic salts contain an acid anion as well as some hydroxide. An example would be basic copper carbonate, which is effectively a mixture of CuCO3 and Cu(OH)2.

Acids and bases are known for their tendency to react readily. Acids are typified by free protons (-H) while bases usually contain an available hydroxyl group (-OH). When another element or compound reacts with one of these groups and replaces it, this forms a salt. I'll use my favorite reaction as an example, sodium with water. Water is composed of a free proton loosely bound to a hydroxyl group, and these two groups freely dissociate from each other. Sodium is strongly positive, so it attracts the negatively charged hydroxyl ions, thus forming the base salt sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye. The free protons from the water combine with the extra electrons left over from the reaction, bind together, and form hydrogen gas (H2), which, if the reaction is carried out in open air, can be ignited by the heat of the reaction.
