I've just replaced my computer, as the last one died a death, but if I connect it and sync it tells me that it will erase the information how do I get around that?

You can copy the files on your iPod by downloading iDump, and then select what you want copied on your iPod, and press start copy. iDump is completely free and does it's job well.

This will allow you to take whatever it is on your iPod onto a new computer, a friend’s computer, or if you deleted your music by mistake. I use it myself as a personal iPod recovery program and it works great.

Download iDump from this source:

Well, there's two ways. You can set the ipod to sync manually (Do this by selecting the ipod in itunes and then checking the sync manually box in the preferences) and then you just drag the new stuff to the ipod.

What would be easier would be to get the music that's currently on the ipod into iTunes on your new computer. Since the old computer is dead, you can do this by using an app that pulls music off the ipod (unfortunately apple can't build this into itunes, or the RIAA will get pissy) There are a lot of apps that can do this, though. A few that I've found for windows, though I haven't necessarily tried them all:
iGadget ( http://www.ipodsoft.com/site/pmwiki.php?n=igadget.Homepage )
YamiPod ( http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/ )
iPod2PC ( http://www.casicakes.com/ )
TuneJack ( http://www.softpedia.com/get/IPOD-TOOLS/Other-IPOD-tools-Updates/TuneJack.shtml )
iRepo ( http://www.purpleghost.com/index.php?q=irepox )
iPod->Folder ( http://www.longfingers.com/ipodfolder/ )

If you use a mac, or just don't like these programs for whatever reason, you can always do a search for "ipod" on versiontracker.com
