Today I checked with Lowes, Namco, and Leslie Pool but none of them had any answers or were very helpful. Can you tell me what I need to do? Do I have to cure it first; with what? What type of paint do I use? Thanks in advance!

Swimming pool paint
It's a "rubber" based (not latex) paint. It will last longer than most other options that you are probably going to find. I once used it on a large concrete fish pond and had no problems. I don't remember how long we kept the fish out, but it wasn't very long. This paint is about the nastiest paint I've ever worked with, so I only use it when I absolutely have to. (hard to clean up from a big job) Another option would be a non-flat latex house paint (first, use a latex primer). Latex, although it dries to the touch quickly, takes about four weeks to cure. This won't last very long but will be a little cheaper and easier than the rubber based paint.

Curing paint does not require an extra step. It is a reference to how long a paint takes to harden chemically (not dry). After the paint cures, it should not be harmful to the birds chemically. Also, the above mentioned paints do not require an additive to harden.

An epoxy type paint should also hold up well. I have not used any of these for this type of project, so I'm not sure. You should be able to find this at either a paint store or a large home center. Read the label.

Use an epoxy paint. It's going to last longer and seal the concrete better than any other paint available to the public.
BTW, epoxy paint is similar to the finish on alot of appliances. You may find that a good appliance epoxy will give you the best results and won't leach out toxins into the water.

Hi, It's a special paint. Home Depot, Lowes, and other places probably wouldn't carry it . Try looking for a place that sells Garden statues, bird baths. I know Armstrong nursery used to sell it,maybe they still do. But it's special because is it constantly under water, but the thing is, it has to be very non toxic to birds. The tiniest amount will kill a bird if it isn't. Hey, Maybe a vets office would know? Anyway, good luck,Bye

I would call one of the concrete specialty companies that actually make these and ask them or.....you could also email an actual paint manufacture with the question rather than a retailer. Retailers just don't have info this technical. I would think concrete stain or paint used on driveways would be OK, but would have to be cured well so as to not bleed toxic chemicals out to our feathered friends.

If the concrete is still "Raw" I'd use STAIN rather than any type of Paint.
Just one old Wolfs opinion; so many years; and so many gallons later.

I have several bird baths around the yard, I don't paint them, I go around every day and brush them out clean, and refill them with clean water. The pain I have tried just peels from the constant moisture.

i don't know about that one, the paint might leach contaminants into the bird water, it might poison them.

Leave it as it is, that way you know the birds will be O.K.
