Ecological issues like "global warming" and "over population" were supposed to have already killed us off based on the predictions postulated 30 or so years ago by the same types who whine about that stuff now. That ilk used to also whine about thermonuclear destruction when it seemed as though Russia and the USA would annihilate each other with nuclear bombs.
The solutions they proposed back then were just as stupid and meaningless as the ones they propose now for those things. I am continually astonished that the news media gives that stuff as much coverage as it does, even with the historical record in-tow.
No, the real problem is the lack of conviction that humankind has the capacity to apprehend reality on a level beyond that experienced by the individual. You see, the problem is that the dominant institutions of our civilization have adopted the policy that the philosophical process has led us to a point where it is no longer worthwhile to ponder the idea that an ultimate "right & wrong" exists in nature.
The placement of your question in the philosophy section is commendably apropos.
I sense that you must realize that the underlying issue is much deeper than the enviros claim, otherwise you'd have simply asked this question in their section of Y/A.

Over population's the only issue, really gnawing at mankind. Nobody's addressing it, so it's the one with the heavy artillery. And because it's a blind-side issue, it will only be addressed by the luck of the draw.
Maybe humans will figure out how to cure all illness, end war, feed everyone recycled protein, clean up and drink urine.
There's still a finite amount of land area for humans to occupy, and to the extent they're able they'll continue trying to fill it until something stops them.

The issues of terrorism, one-upmanship, greed, selfishness and moral degradation are some of the issues that are weighing and wearing down the world today.
Terrorism in the name of safeguarding one's own religion,One-upmanship to be the boss of the world, selfishness with the aim that only him/her and their family should be safe secure and happy, moral degradation to achieve fiscal sensual ad other wants.
Why? because the tolerance towards other religions and other nations is lessening, mutual respect of their prosperity and development is weakening. religious fanaticism is able to attract innocent beings, accumulation of wealth and acquiring best status in the society through any means is on the rise, dictatorial tendencies of a few nations, weakening of ethical values and, lethargy and impotent legal system to prosecute and punish the wrong doers are some of the causes.

The weight of the world is man's own demise. We are destroying ourselves from influences which we CAN control..unfortunately we CHOOSE not to. Power..who runs things on this earth is the problem ..a trickle down effect along with mirroring effects from the general populous.

The mass of the lower nature found in each of us.
Such is the true weight upon the world, not is it the simple portions occupied and ratios per square meter of space of mere bodies -- 'that' the Earth countenances or does not.

Technology!!!
- It needs more people
- needs machine
- needs fuel
- needs energy
- needs space
- needs disposal area
- oxygen
- cold air
- etc....
also it needs more humans to use..
And more humans makes more technology..
Will end up having lots of humans..................
less resources...
According to Darwin Fight for Survival...
& we will see 9/11/01 or earthquake(natural disaster), Hurricane Katrina, Sunami....
So I think TECHNOLOGY !!! is the major concern.
