PUTTY is software that you can connect to a remote computer through SSH.

In windows XP you can discover a computer's IP address by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig. I can't remember how to do the same in Linux.

This is usually used for two purposes. A lot of companies have some of their servers, like their web servers, in a DMZ, which simply means it is outside the firewall, but inside the company. In order to connect to a server in a DMZ, most companies require the use of a SSH layer. So a person behind the firewall in the company will initiate a connection to the computer in the DMZ and can issue dos / linux commands to the computer, or they can remotely connect to the computer through the SSH layer using something like remote desktop.

The other use, is to just connect to any computer that accepts an SSH connection and issue dos or unix / linux commands remotely. Some colleges and universities will have a server available for students to loggin remotely and do their class work.
