I was reading an ESPN piece earlier today that asked of Alex, "When has he not been about the money," and it made me wonder where this idea comes from. Why is he seen as more greedy than anyone else? He did his service time in Seattle without complaint, was granted free agency, and signed a huge contract because Tom Hicks was dumb enough to offer $100m more than anyone else. That's not greed, that's just being smart.

Not long ago, when a Rangers-Sox trade involving Alex was discussed, he even offered to take a pay cut to make it happen. Now, he's talking about opting out of his deal, which to me just seems like a smart business move.

But why does this "greedy" impression stick? I don't see anything to support it.

The problem most people have is that they can not fathom the amount of money that is brough tin by baseball. They say he is not worth 25 million dollars. BUt if you look at it in terms of percentage they are all under paid! Baseball reported 12 billion dollars in revenue last year, A-Rod (the highest paid player) take in 0.2% of that money himself. He was offered a huge contract by a moron owner and decided to take it, any other person on this planet would have done the same thing...he was even quoted as saying right after he signed the contract that no one is ever worth that money but who is he to turn it down. Yes he could have stayed in Seattle, they had a good team at the time and would have lost in the playoffs every year...remember that was Griffey's team at the time; he wanted his own team, he wanted to be the guy on the team, he got that and decided he wanted to win more than being the man on a last place team. He agreed to be traded to a team where he would have to change positions and live under extreme scrutiny no matter what he is doing...why...TO WIN IT ALL!

People do not understand that this is a business more than anything, if he wants to maximize his earning potential he has to opt out and get a new contract! Would anyone else tell their boss "No I like my pay the way it is, do not give me a raise...in fact if it would help out I would prefer it if you lessened my pay to help out you the owner!" That does not happen and anyone who thinks he is just greedy is a moron who should not be allowed to live in this free society!

Hmm . . . maybe because he left a Seattle team that had good talent, for a team that stunk to hgih heavens. The Rangers offered his a $252 million over 10 years. The next closest deal offered him $160 million. Now he's going to opt out of that contract, so he can sign a 7 or 8 year deal woth 32-35 million per. How is that not about the money? Don't get me wrong, A-Rod is a great player. Maybe he'll be the best ever. He is worth $25 million per year on a team like the Yankees who have no limit. But $35?!? That isnt worht anyone

Because most people are not even close to making A-Rod numbers, the media is jealous and can't directly say it.

There are people at work with fraternization involved doing something that is not even on their field (catch my drift?) and will not even be happy after their 'raise'.

I didn't hear too many people complain about the Rocket deals for the past two years Yet he is not even that good. If any. I would go for the money though I would have married a better looking women. She looks over Forty

People think A-Rod is greedy because he is getting payed 25 million dollars a year and he is requesting more money the next year.

Lets be honest if you could get over 30 million dollars from a team wouldnt you take the money?

I don't think he is greedy. I mean if someone offers you that much money, then you take it. You don't so no thanks I'll pass, you take the money. My whole thinking all along was that A-Rod was offered that money and he was smart enough to take what was offered to him. Would people call Derek Jeter greedy if he made the same amount as A-Rod? How come nobody questions Clemens' salary choice? It's time for people to find something else to talk about other than A-Rod's salary.

Yeah I dont really get it. I mean you have to think what you would do if you are Alex Rodriguez. You are the best hitter in the game currently and you are destined to become the greatest right handed hitter of all time. Your agent tells you that you are worth a contract worth 30 million dollars a year. Why wouldnt you want it? I mean who honestly can say they wouldnt want to make 30 million dollars a year.

He is greedy because lets face it....Does he really need $30 million a year. Yes he is a great player and deserves to be the highest paid. But he already has more money then he knows what to do with. Why not take less money and let your team go out and get more players to help your team win. $30 million is ridiculous and theres only a hand ful of teams that will even be able to offer that. He already has about $300 million dollars. Why does he need to sign a lets say 5 year contract for $30 million a year. Does he really need another $150 million? No, so take the cut to win help your team win the World Series.

Most people that dislike Alex Rodriguez stem from jealousy, no doubt. He has always given his all, he almost never sits down, plus he is really good with the fans and media. I am not sure who deserves more annual salary than A-Rod? Maybe Jeter, Vlad or Pujols?
