What does "Degauss" do for a CRT monitor?

If you've ever passed a strong magnet near the screen of a TV or computer monitor, you've seen what the fields will do to the picture. A CRT tube uses magnetic fields to control streams of electrons which hit the inside of the screen and strike a phosphorous material. The phosphor then glows, creating the image you see on the outside.

Various influences (including static buildup on the screen, improper electron gun alignment, large magnets placed near the tv/monitor, etc.) will cause an undesirable magnetic field to form around the screen, distorting the picture and throwing off the colors.

Degauss is designed to cancel out these fields, restoring a clearer picture and truer colors. It certainly won't hurt the CRT, so never be afraid to use it.

Hope this helps.

A CRT monitor will eventually build up a magnetic field which caused problems with the picture. Degauss will fix this problem.

Deguass either by a button or menu option
will pass an electrical current thru a coil
around the back side of the CRT

this will randomize magnetic fields
and improve purity of colors

you can't hurt anything by trying it
as long as there are no floppies near the monitor
