Please, this is not meant to be rude or anything, but Pope Benedict scares the bejeezus out of me. I see those pointy teeth and ears and those dark circles under his eyes and all that white hair and I wonder if the guy travels with a large coffin shaped crate filled with dirt and if he is from Transylvania instead of Germany. Lately, I have been wondering if he is the albino monk Silas all grown up. Is anybody else scared of him or is it just me? I hear he is coming to NY next year and I am outta here that week!! Seriously. Pax - C

Well I am serious - he scares me. I cannot even look at him on TV.

And he has these tiny little feet in those red slippers. Has anyone ever seen this guy in the daylight? Or is he basically a creature of the night?????

That's funny. But I don't think he is scary...

I don't really know. I'm not a christian, but an hindu. But I do think his pointy teeth are scary. But any man of god should be treated with respect no matter how they look. But other than the "scary looks" he's alright. He's trying to do good.

" The pope tells Catholics that protestants are wrong and going to go to hell." I found this in a reply and find it a little hard to belive. How could anyone tell another that they are going to hell. It's wrong.

Well, there you have my obvious ranting. Hope it somehow helped in a miraculous way. lol :)

LOL--found this question, but didn't anticipate it would be you ;)

He is kind of a scary looking man, isn't he? I had this discussion with a Catholic friend right after he was selected as successor to Pope John Paul II, and what we finally came up with was that any man would have a hard time following in Pope John Paul II's shoes, because he both looked and acted in a completely angelic manner. He had a natural kindness and serenity to his face which made him look both humble and sweet.

I will tell you honestly that I avoid looking at pictures of Pope Benedict. While I think he is a pious and good man, the very first thing I think when I see his face is, "Come into my parlor said the spider to the fly." Also, the very first time I saw an official portrait of him, I thought of a monk called Ambrosio, from an old gothic book called "The Monk." Just based on appearances, I can honestly say that Pope Benedict looks to me like someone who could easily fall from grace. (And let's face it, once you are the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, that's an awfully long fall.)

So no, it isn't just you, he creeps me out, too. One of my Catholic friends is Italian, and she goes back to Rome every other summer to visit her family. She always goes to at least one mass at the Vatican while she is there, and she told me that Pope Benedict's spirit is very different from that of John Paul II. She attributes it to the fact that he is a scholar, which is kind of an ego-powered field--you cannot publish if you don't have supreme confidence in what you are saying. She said that she expects that both his spirit and body will eventually relax, and that his ego will fall away, and that he will become more humble, and that his spirit will begin to project that. She says that when his spirit becomes completely humble and he surrenders completely to God, his face and body will follow, and he won't look so "aggressive" (her word, not mine).

Until that happens, I will continue to avoid looking at pictures of him.

YES. Even my parents said so. The former Pope John Paul II had an angelic face. Pope Benedict XVI "Ratzinger" is creepy with the dark circles below his eyes and his overall look.

well, that's because the previous pope has a more charming and saintly looks. we were used to see that look of a face of a pope all through the years, then all of a sudden, a change. a more stern look this time. he's just suffering the comparisons.

Since I am of German blood, let me tell you about Germans. Opinionated as we are, the majority of Germans are light skinned, but tan easier than our northern cousins and have dark hair and dark eyes. My father is a dead ringer for a vampire, but a grayed older vampire. When he was young, you'd have said, yes, yes, suck my blood. suck it. He had that gorgeous point in his hair and it was black. Thin and light skinned with deep set eyes. Very handsome. Because he is a big man, many of my friends were scared of my dad when I was young. My fiance' who is in his 30's was very excited when my dad talked to him about politics and looked into his eyes. My fiance' told me that my dad's eyes were hypnotizing and it was easy to see why when my dad became someone's friend, they had nothing but nice things to say.

My dad isn't the pope, but they come from the same areas of Germany and are the same age. Who knows they may even be cousins. Transylvania isn't far from Germany and they are related in blood.

oooh, oooh, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh!

Well, I am catholic, living in a country were the 94% consider themselves as such and I consider him scary, we even say he looks like a real Hannibal Lecter.

And the worst is that he is trying to be a new John Paul II, with all his travels. He just must admit he is not charismatic

Well, he scares me in a different way. He is bound to keep the Church in the Dark Ages. It will not become revelent to many people until it joins the 21st century.
Actually,he does look like one of the walking dead, come to think about it...

The Pope is Christ's Vicar on earth. What difference does it make how he looks.Scary? I think you have been watching too many of those movies. You don't have to look at him if he affects you that much. It is the job he is doing that is more important than his looks.

Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting. (Proverbs 31:30)

Surely a mature and spiritual person like you does not judge a book by its cover or a person by what he or she looks like.

I wonder what you will look like when you are 80.

With love in Christ.
