ACTUALLY, what we "see" when viewing a mountain-scape from a distance is the refracted light.
The times I traveled from Arizona into Colorado I notice this "light effect" on a more dramatic scale. There are certain times of the day that the colors are so dramatic and others when the ground looks "just worn out (brown)."

it is the fog and the haze in the air that makes the mountains look blue for example the blue ridge mountain in Virgina.

Smoke, haze and water vapor. So it is with the "Blue Ridge" Mountains of Virginia.
