Neither.
It sits there and idles.
I park and start in neutral. I pull in the clutch out of habit.
There is no jiffy stand switch.
There is no clutch lever switch.
It's a 2006. (spelled Harley DaviDson)

My 2003 Dyna does not have a safety switch on either the side stand, or the clutch. Therefore you can ride off with the stand in the down position, as well as have the starter engage when the bike is in gear and the clutch lever all the way out. You must get in the habit of putting the stand up when you are on the bike. I almost always park the bike in neutral unless on a hill where it could roll away even on the stand.

If it is in gear it should die.
Push starts are for old people and posers? I'm 24 and my chopper has a 100" motor with a 6 speed. If they even made a kicker for my tranny and I put it on, I'd break my leg every time I tried to start it. I built my bike from scratch with my own two hands. Be careful who you call a poser.

if the bike is leaning on the stand it will make part of a circle to the left then stall unless the throttle is opened to much then it will stand itself up & fall on the right side, the stock kick stand has a lock that wont disengage until the weight is taken off it. you cant kick 1 over with the clutch in because the kicker works through the clutch to turn the motor.

ok, everybody is right.
now let me explain, all domestic bikes (U.S. Models) do not have the jiffy stand switch. All HDI bikes (International Models) have a jiffy stand switch and will not run with the bike in gear, clutch released, and jiffy stand down.
Side note. All bikes starting in 2007 models have a clutch switch. The bike will not start with the clutch lever released and the bike in gear.

depending on the year, if its 07 youll have to have the clutch lever in to start it. regardless there is no switch on the the side stand and it will take off if started in gear and you ll have to chase it in a circle if it doesn't fall over first. you should just put it in neutral after you shut it off.

The engine should start if it's in neutral with the kickstand down, but will shut off if you shift to first with the kickstand down.
