The liberals do not want the Black citizens of our country to remember that. It is bad for their line of "We, the democrats are and always have been for the black people"

Because there were so few Republicans in either house of Congress FROM THE SOUTH in 1964! That's my "lib spin". Since you seem to percentages, see what you make of these: The regional breakdown of the 1964 vote: The original House version: * Southern Democrats: 7-87 (7%-93%) * Southern Republicans: 0-10 (0%-100%) * Northern Democrats: 145-9 (94%-6%) * Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%-15%) The Senate version: * Southern Democrats: 1-20 (5%-95%) * Southern Republicans: 0-1 (0%-100%) * Northern Democrats: 45-1 (98%-2%) * Northern Republicans: 27-5 (84%-16%) Now, in 2010, there are 17 Republican Senators from the South. That is a 1600% increase in the number of southern Senators between the years 1964 and 2010. Now, in 2010 there are 82 Southern Republicans in the House of Representatives. That is an 810% increase in the numbers of Southerners in the House between the years 1964 - 2010 Now, Explain to us, how, if the Republican Party was perceived by voters as the champion of Civil Rights from 1964 - 2010, that there have been such HUGE increases in the number of Southern members of both Houses of Congress, in the states that voted AGAINST the Civil Rights Act of 1964? YOU are the one who is trying to "white wash history" by claiming the Republicans Party of today is the same Party it was 56 years ago! You ignore the regional factor. 1964 led to 1968 and Nixon's "Southern Strategy" -- when the Republicans decided to go after disaffected Southern Democrats. The Southern Strategy was a great success. What was once the "solid" Democratic South became majority Republican. Your understanding of political history is like a Swiss cheese Edit: GWS's claims are BS -- The relevant number is not the number of "Dixiecrats" who became republicans. The relevant number is the increase in Republicans in Congress FROM THE SOUTH. The Dixiecrats ran in 1948. Strom Thurmond was their Candidate for President! He died at the age of 100 SEVEN years ago. The Dixiecrats are all DEAD. They died off over the years 1970 - 2003. They were replaced by Republicans. GWS doesn't think it's significant that the Dixiecrat Candidate for President became a Republican. Really?

Did you further know that statistics can be made to say anything?
The legislation was advocated by two Democratic Presidents.
You're also forgetting that Southern Democrats at that time are modern day Republicans now. I need not mention any more proof than to look at the history of Strom Thurmond.
Democrats turned into Southern Dixiecrats who then aligned with the Republican Party.
If your argument is that the Republican Party is for civil rights, then you've got a lot of spinning to do.
Did you further know that the Republican Party has never on one occasion voted in majority for a piece of legislation that would benefit working class economics? Statistics be damned; there is more to it than just smoke and mirrors.

Now the Southern Democrats vote for Republicans on a national basis. LBJ said that the Democrats would lose the South for a generation because he pushed for and signed the Civil Rights Act. I think he underestimated the length of time.
The Republicans implemented their Southern Strategy and now we have people like Bush and Cheney in the White House.
Edit: Some Republicans think that they can fool African Americans with this nonsense. They should remember that we actually know the history of our civil rights in this country. The Republican Party has changed and we have noted that.

That was also when Dems. became Repubs. & Repubs. became Dems.
The 2 parties flip-floped because of Civil Rights. In the South anyway.

I love these answers, the Repubs were Dems then and the Dems were Repubs. When they voted for the bills it was opposite day. LOL! Hey, hey, Does that mean JFK was a republican and Nixon is a Democrat? Just wondering, or does revisionist history only work against republicans?
