First off, it's "college," and "desperately." I'm not meaning to be rude, so please don't take it that way. I want to help, and if you think you're going to make it through college, you should probably brush up on your spelling.
Anyways, down to brass tacks. Ebay can be a good source for cheap laptops, but I would recommend at least a Pentium-III class machine (at least 800 MHz), unless you want to deal with an old version of Windows or install and learn to use Linux (it's not the easiest thing to learn, especially if you've been raised on Windows, but it's free and you don't have to worry about viruses/spyware). Windows XP will run on a Pentium II or older Pentium III (under 800 MHz), but it will be extremely slow. Also, I'd recommend at the VERY LEAST 256MB RAM if you're running XP. Expect to spend about $200, and don't expect it to be able to run any serious games or newer software without a big lag.
Personally, I think you should visit your college's financial aid office - if you're eligible, they may approve an additional student loan for you to buy a computer. My college offered this, and when my old motherboard failed I used the loan to buy $400 worth of new components. This is usually a one-time thing, so if you do this, buy something decent (1GB RAM, dual-core processor, 60GB+ HDD) so you'll have something to last you throughout your studies.
Hope this helps, and best of luck with your education!
