Because we were in a race to get to the moon first and if Russia won they would have put their flag up there.... That and a bottle of Vodka and an AK-47

The first manned flight to the world was not accomplished by the world. It was accomplished by one unique and very special group of people known as the United States of America.
This remarkable country is like none other in the world. In America they do the impossible on a regular basis. It is amazing. Ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things every day. America is that great because of the gift of liberty our forefathers gave us.
That flag on the moon is a symbol. A symbol of what can be accomplished by people who are free to dream, to pursue happiness. Free to try, to strive, to reach the stars. People who can rise to any challenge and accomplish any task. That flag is and should be an American flag because the American flag represents the best of mankind.

Americans paid for the mission. Americans risked their lives to walk on the moon. It sure as heck better be an American flag! When France puts a man on the moon, they can plant their white flag up there.

Different times, different motives.
Perhaps if we accomplished this today, with Russia and other countries contributing resources (such as it is with the space station) a world flag would be more appropriate.
As it were - the American flag was our way of saying that we had accomplished JFK's promise to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade (1969.)

firstly i dont know if there IS a world flag or not but one could have been sewn by a modern betsy ross or something. possibly the U.S.'s main reason was not to go there to show that humans/earthlings exist and made it to the moon. i imagine their main focus was on exploration and possible colonization and to also use the moon as a stopping/refueling point for exploring other places too. so the U.S. made it there first so they planted their flag thinking other countries of earth would eventually make it to the moon someday too.

Because the human race is selfish. That actually is a good example and shows that the human race as a whole isn't fully developed and mature.
Edit:
In my opinion, if a world flag were used then it would have sent a strong message to the other countries that we want to unify world. Its like sharing the trophy. Just using the American flag, makes it appear that we want to dominate.

Sure. Put the Muslim flag up there. We have a great world.
By the way, American's hard work (taxes) paid for it. Not China or Russia.
By the way, Russia and China hated us at the time.

They put an American flag since it was Americans who reached the moon. However they also put up a plaque that said they came in peace for all mankind.

The answer is simple. It was during the middle of the Cold War and planting a US Flag on the moon was our way of giving the middle finger to the USSR and all those other bloody commies!
