Kirby, Electrolux and other well known brands are real good But they can be very expensive.
I used to own a janitorial company and if you want to by one new find a janitorial supply store near you and get a real good comercial vacume for a lot less than you would pay for one of the expensive brands.

I bought my first Hoover 10 years ago & after about 8 years it was absorbed into the tool supply of the men that build tract houses for my husband. It lasted for two and a half years cleaning up construction debris and vacuuming NEW carpet. New carpet is the worst because it has little pieces of carpet and long fibers that get caught in the vacuum all of which can be career ending for a vacuum. I bought it at Wal-mart for $70. When I got sick of chasing down my vacuum between when the housekeeper comes I replaced the my old Hoover vacuum I bought a new Hoover with this great Dirt Finder feature (it acually has a "clean" and "dirty" light that tells you if it's picking anything up). I love that, some areas need to be vacuumed extra and this way you know which areas they are at a glance. It's now about a year and a half old and still going strong, I just replaced the belt. I am partial to the the upright with a bag. Mine is a Hoover Supreme (self-propelled) with Dirt Finder. Great Vacuum. I think I actually looked at consumerreports.com before I bought it. It was actually pretty reasonably priced too. My housekeeper hasn't even been able to destroy my Hoover which is amazing, they can even destroy a mop.
Stay away from Dyson, I know 4 people who bought one liked it for about 3 months and then hated it for a year. One died completely and had to be replaced after about 13 months all swear they will never buy another Dyson. One of the major problems is they are mostly if not all plastic and not very user friendly. They look really flashy and nice in the store, but they look terrible after a year.
Try Sears, they usually have all of the vacuums out so you can try them.

The best vacuum cleaner is a weekly maid service!!!!hahaha, no really I don't think it is so much the vacumm but;
1) teach the animals where they can lie down in the living room, maybe put a down an area rug that you teach the dogs is their only allowed place to be if they want to be in this room. Then you can just wash the area rug(s) once a week. Also, make sure the kids or husband brush the dogs a couple times a week to help with excess hair, possibly in the laundry room or garage area.
2) You have a super idea to keep the shoes out of house, I do the same thing, but remember to have a convenient shoe rack available by the door, and if it is cold the kids can wear slipper or house shoes.
3) Regarding vacuums, my favorite is a small shop-vac type that can vacumm and shampoo rugs also. I bought one years ago from hsc for around $100. The rugs take only about 2 hours to dry and the room smells great.
4) As for Husband and Kids.... I found that by allowing food in the kitchen, dinning room and living room, outside ONLY and NOT THIER BEDROOMS, saved me hours and hours of cleaning. Give them a choice, "if you want to eat that yogurt you need to eat in the _____________ or ______________ room... You are not allowed to eat/drink in here the bedrooms.... so which room do you choose to eat in???"
5) Super Job on showing the kids how to maintain a clean home, just be sure to involve them in the process too, like kids over 6 can vacumm 1 room as a weekly chore.
CONGRATULATIONS on your new house. Just set the RULES FIRST!!!!

DYSON DYSON DYSON>>> Im sure you have seen the commercial of that foreign guy with the big yellow vaccum. I bought the first one he came out with a few years back and it was a pretty penny a few hundred dollars. It was honestly the best investment I have ever made. I have a spitz who sheds in clumps all over the house and he is white. It still works like it did the first say I got it and it has gone through hell. I have bashed it into things dropped it and it still runs great it also has an AMAZING warranty. If it EVER loses suction at all you can return it for a full refund or a new one. IT doesnt have any bags and uses a cyclone system that is patented. To dump the dirt is soooo easy you remover the canister by holding the top of it and you press a button and it comes of the vaccum then all you do is pull a lever at the top while holding over a garbage can and the bottom drops out and everything falls into the trash no touching anything then you place it back on the vaccum. It is amazing how well it works and I will be giving it to my kids to use one day!!!!!!
They have come out with a newer model called the animal i have heard great thing about it also.
I hope you get the Dyson!!!!! you wont regret it!!!!
Goodluck!

In my opinion the Miele Cat & Dog is the best Vacuum Cleaner I have ever used it has a turbo brush that brushes up the hair. I believe they even come with a powerhead now which increases the power of the suction.
I've had lots of machines and this one has outlasted all of them. I have a Dyson and it just does not compare to the Miele.
This machines keeps going and going and for 10 years I've cleaned up my home and building sites.
It's not a cheap machine approximately AU $600 but well worth the money.

My favorite website is http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/index.htm they test a everything and give you their unbiased results. To view all the results it's $26/year or $6/month. When I bought my vacuum a little over a year ago I bought the one they recommended. It's funny how some of the cheaper ones beat out the expensive Dyson and stuff. The website also have reviews for just about every other appliance, electronics, travel, food, health/fitness, the list goes on. I hope it helps!

I recently bought a Rainbow vacuum, they are expensive but they work very well, it cleans with water it has lots of attachments and i even got a carpet cleaner with mine, also it is not just a vacuum it is an air purifer to. there arent all the filters of a regular vacuum so the dog hair dont get stuck in all those places that it is hard to get to, and they have an 8 year parts and labor warranty most things. well I hope this helps

Miele is the best vacuum cleaner period. The Miele S5 Capricorn has an awesome SEB 236 Powerhead and it will pick up your pet hair like crazy! Not only that Miele is made to last 20 to 25 Years (and trust me they do!). I had a Miele back in 1990 and just upgraded to the new Miele S5 series so lets see that is about 17 years with pets and kids and it is still kicking. The only reason I got a new one is because I was ready to upgrade to Miele's new line of vacuums because they are much better than my old one and honestly it is nice to mix things up a bit :). But that old is still used in my basement. It has a seven year motor warranty for their new vortex motor which is super powerful. Miele is known for only making the best from their dishwashers to their vacuums everything is incredible. The Miele Capricorn w/ SEB 236 Head is Miele's top of the line vacuum cleaner. It is the ultimate in luxury, it is a workhorse and is the most beautiful looking vacuum cleaner I have ever seen. The Miele SEB 236 Powerhead is made to really drudge out the pet hair. It's has a swivel neck for maneuverability and all-round bumper strip to protect your furniture and automatic shut-off when in the parked position. It has wonderful edge cleaning and like I said before it will pick up all of your pet hair no problem. If you use this vacuum to pick up bird seed on a carpeted floor along the edges of your wall it will pick up ever piece guarantee it. You can use the powerhead on the bare floor which does a wonderful job. It feels like it is gliding with it's all rubber wheels on a hard suface. But if you want to use an even nicer tool it comes with an SBB 300-3 Floorbrush which is amazing. It has super wide holes all around and it will pick every up as well. It barely feels like you are pushing anything and it has a knuckle which allows you to twist and turn into and spot you want like behind the toilets, buffet table, couches and the floorbrush itself is low enough to get under the baseboards and kickjams. The filtration is 99.95% effective at 0.3 microns which is amazing. Thanks to its HEPA filter and super intensive clean bags the vacuum is able to achieve this kind of filtration. Miele tested this vacuum to make sure it is going to last for you, they made robots which pulled out the cord winder 20,000 times to make sure it is going to last (that is equivalent to pulling out the cord winder once a day for 50 years). They also made the machine go through threshold test, hose tests (by the way the hose handle is incrediblely nice and is crush proof), cleaning tests and of course filtration tests. This is the machine you want and is perfect for your situation.
I bought my Miele S5 from Mr. Vac and Mrs. Sew and they are selling the Miele Capricorn w/ SEB 236 Powerhead for only $999 (that is $150 less than everyone on the internet) with free shipping and no tax (because I do not live in new york). They were wonderful to deal with and they made my shopping experience a pleasant one. Here is their number (you have to call them up to get that price because that price can not be found anywhere on the Internet):

Kirby, and then Elextrolux. Kirby seems to have more sucking power. Yes, it does have the bag, but it is sealed and it works wonderful.
Elextrolux I also have and it is great.
Never heard anything good about Dyson.
My friend has one and wishes she never bought it, and borrows my Kirby.
