Actually, the Chinese LOVE the number 8.
It is considered very lucky and symbolises wealth n prosperity.
I'm staying in a country of Asia where the majority is made up of the Chinese.

I don't know about 8, but mandy_15sg is right. 4 (si) sounds like the word death (si), which is why Chinese people believe you shouldn't go to a funeral if the number of your age has a four in it. As for 8, maybe it's because it sounds like the English word "ate".

No! I know fluent Chinese, and number eight in Chinese does NOT sound like "death" or "evil", it is number 4 (si). Btw, number 8 is considered a very lucky number by Chinese people.
