I found an 8th edition of a book I need for one of my classes for only .30cents, but the text book we are supposed to be using is a ninth edition which costs $85 something. Do you think it'd be alright for me to use the 8th edition... or would it really make things harder for me, since the instructor is teaching out of the 9th?

That's an excellent buy! There isn't usually that much of a difference between latest editions of textbooks. Professors often write them, and get more money for revising it. You may just want to compare it to someone in your class whom you know and see if there are any differences. Note those, and if need be, copy the needed pages.

Best wishes.

It really depends on the class... sometimes the book has barely changed so the previous edition is fine... other times important details are different...
I would recommend asking your instructor... as s/he has probably taught out of the 8th edition before the 9th existed... so s/he should know...
The one thing that will be different is the page numbers... trying to keep track of where you should be may be something to consider...

Sometimes the editions are pretty much the same book with an added chapter but sometimes alot of changes are done. I would talk to the professor about seeing if you could use the 8th edition and if it would be alright for his class. Some teachers don't care but others really do so talk to them

It depends on the subject. If it is a Literature book, then Shakespeare hasn't changed much, but advanced Physics migh change from year to year. I would ask the professor, but I have used old editions in the past for science and education courses with no ill effect other than occasionally being off by a page or two on assignments.

you should ask your professor. some professors really dont care. usually the only difference between the new edition and the old are the examples that are used.

You'd get lost, not to mention some of the material could have been reworked or added to.

I hate to say this bite the bullet & buy the correct edition.

Have you tried half.com or amazon or borders?,
