I plan on having a child in about four years. I would perfer a birthcontrol that shortens or minimizes my period, but it is not a must. Any suggestions?

Okay, there are SO many choices out there! First decide if you want the shot, a pill, a patch, or the nuva ring. Honestly, if I could get over putting something up there eevery 3 weeks I would go with the nuva ring. My doctor refused to put me on the depro vera shot because typically women gain 40 pounds on this birth control. Now, with the pill there are so many out there my goddd I don't know where to begin. If you have a heavy period now, go with a birth control that has 24 active pills (4 days for a period), that way your period will be shorter. I, myself, already had an extremely light period so when I went on the 24 active pills I freaked out e very month because I only had my period for one day, if I was lucky. So if you're okay with have an extremely light period, go for the 24 active day one. Birth control is really expensive, I was on Loestrin Fe for 10 months paying $30 a month(without insurance its 80), untill I finally got over the fact that brand name and generic are exactly the same, now I get generic works just as good and it's only $5 a month.

I'm sorry for all the poorly constructed answers that people have given you. Although abstinence is the only way to protect yourself 100% from sex, in reality people will have sex.

I would suggest getting a combined pill since they offer more protection than a progestogen only pill.

Birth control pills are over 99% effective at protecting pregnancy when taken correctly. They all have the same effectiveness.

Therefore, almost all pills are open to you. Tell your gynecologist what you look for in a pill, and she should be able to offer suggestions for you.

I just saw this on the news today, a new one called Lybrel, it is regular birth control but is supposed to stop periods, its now approved by the fda, and it says that woman dont ever have to have another period if they dont want. The pill works the best for me, though i havent tried this kind, so ask your dr, maybe you can try it and see how it goes.

I am on depo and after my second shot I quit having periods all together. But i have heard that people who are depo may have a harder time getting pregnant.
The pill is kinda risky, but only if you forget to take it.
I dont know much about the patch
The best thing to do is ask your doctor next time you go in.

I like Ovcon. It's out in generic, cheap, but it doesn't mess with my peace of mind. Some BCP caused me to be depressed. This one doesn't. You can take it 3 months straight.

If you're serious about not having a baby, I suggest daddy practice birth control, too. Maybe you forgot your pills for a couple of days, maybe you had to take an anti-biotic, who knows? Lotsa good reasons for the pill to fail (all human error, but of course, you're human).

I have been on many different types of birth control for medical reasons, and my favorite, by far, is Loestrin. It does shorten your period to only three days, and it is a low enough dose of estrogen that it doesn't make you feel sick or gain weight or any of that other stuff.

nuva ring is the best thing going. the hormone release is constant, so your levels aren't all over the charts which pretty much eliminates side effects. you can skip your period by leaving it in for 4 weeks at a time instead of taking it out for a week.

The Nuva ring. Hands down the best birth control I have ever used.

That is such a personal choice. I personally use the Mirena IUD which is mostly for women who have had children. I love it. I no longer have heavy painful periods.
