I just finished college and am entering into the professional workforce. I don't have or make a lot of money, but I want to look chic and professional. What are some suggestions of "must-haves" for my new look? Note: I am 24 years old and want to maintain my youth without looking too trendy. I like a lot of classics.

Ladies very helpful answers so far, only I forgot to mention I cant seem to find ANY pants or skirts that fit me because I am a size 00 or a 0. I love Ann Taylor and Express, but I can't seem to find a darn thing in the entire store that fits-not even their 0's!! I guess I could get them altered. If I spend the money to get them altered, what pieces are worth the money, and do you all normally buy the matching blazers with the pants or skirt?

I have the same problem with this too because i work in a lab and its kind of hard to balance it off. I can't really dress up (dont want chemicals on my clothes!) or down (still have to look decent/professional). Well if you go to Express (its pricey but they offer disounts on some days) they have nice work clothes there, and if you are looking for something cheaper try wet seal you can get some dress pants there, and i looked the other day they had a really nice blazer-style top with a pink belt wrapped around with, you can wear that with some pants and the silver heels..its out now u better go check it out. But the clothes from express seem more durble too, they may be pricey but they look professional and they're durable and seem sturdy, like don't rip and tear easily. Buy the knee-pants and some heels and a nice top, or just the pants with nice top and buy your open/closed toe heels frmo aonther store and they sell casual stuff too. If you don't know what to wear, watch what all the othjer ladies wear so u can get an idea of whats appropriate or not. Some wear open-toe heels and sleeveless tops, dres pants, or long skirt, or dress where I work. And no cleavage... i cant believe how many people be showing theirs or just wearin tight clothss (especially them ladies from H.R.!!! whats the hell)??

nice suit, preferably with jacket, skirt and pants that you can break up and wear separately in color like brown, black or navy. Whichever you like best.

cashmere sweater set that you can wear together or separate with the suit pieces.

good pair of jeans, dark rinse straight leg fit or slight boot cut

white button down shirt

good purse. I like coach personally have black and brown

leather jacket, color of your choice.

colorful camisoles for layer.

with these items you should be able to mix and match a bunch of outfits and then build from there as you get older and make more money. The higher quality you can afford and the more "timeless look" you can get the better. you can always add accessories to punch things up.

i love stores like banana republic, ann taylor loft, ann taylor, etc. they are slightly more grown up than places like hollister and AF. You mighy also try Nordstroms. Their brands caslon and semantiks are great. As well as Michael Kors and Kenneth Cole.

Professional lady of any age "must-have" list includes...
-classic earrings, nothing too big - CZ studs 1/2 carat or pearls
-classic watch - nothing plastic or pink
-Two pairs of nice pumps - keep at desk and change into them when you get to work. They last longer that way.
-Always have a nice "interview" suit - black or navy. Good for presentations.
-Multiple tops for under the suit and blazers. When you're under 30 you can have fresher colors.

Look at the high level women at your company to get some cues on what you need in your closet.

An oxford and black dress pants. Try freshening the look by adding bright necklaces, colorful shoes, and vintage purses. But remember that although you want to keep in young, you need to keep it simple.

Button up shirt (short sleeves), khakis, wedges, and a red necklace.
