there is no smell in the garage at all, it's not the lawnmower. there is no smell coming from any drains. it does not smell like the natural gas rotten egg additives, or anything rotten. it isn't sewage. it just smells like gasoline (to me and my 12 yr old daughter). my girlfriend thinks it might smell like raid or gasoline, but we can't figure out why....

It doesn't take much gas to stink up a whole house. Did anybody use gas to clean something (just what would be on a paper towel would do it. Did anyone get it on their clothes, Did anyone use it to clean paint brushes, or clean parts (maybe a while ago and the jar or can, even though originally covered, got spilled, or got a leak). Check the basement and closets, and under the sinks for forgotten solvents, chemicals, insecticides and the like which may be leaking. Sometimes spray cans will develop a pinhole and start leaking if they sit around long enough. (I've had this happen)

I hope this helps!

I think if you smell gasoline.. then it is gasoline you are smelling.. you know as well as I do that gasoline has it's own unique odor.. nothing else that I know of smells like it with one exception.. kerosene has a similiar aroma.. I suggest that if you smell it.. it is located somewhere in or close to your home.. keep searching.. and call the county health department.. I am quite sure that they will be interested in your story.. they may also send you someone who can test the air for you at no charge.. if it affects you..then it will possibly affect others in your area.. call them.. have your air tested.. five will get you ten that somewhere you will find the source...mean time don't light any matches.. good luck

I'm afraid I'm with your second answerer, who someone gave a "thumbs down" already. That smell isn't something to risk/mess with. You should call the non-emergency number for the fire department and talk top them, telling them what you are smelling. They will likely come, sirens blazing, but you certainly do want to save your 12 year old from severe burns or worse, should something happen. Not worth waiting until you accidentally find the cause with a spark....

could be that someone poured gas down the storm drain out front of your house and the fumes are traveling up a pipe that maybe servicing your house I would call the fire Dept. they have sniffers that can determine the source of the smell. These fumes can be volatile so don't wait call now.

Check any appliances that may run on gas- such as a stove or furnace. If you cannot find any source then call a repairman right away (i don't know who exactly you would call for something like this).
Meanwhile don't cause any sparks, heat, or use anything like your stove or fireplace. This could be a serious explosion hazard.

you should call the local fire department, not a repairman.
