I have an iMac, and would like to be able to play, "Flight Simulator X". But im going to have to get parallels for that. If i use parallels solely for this one game, will i be more vulnerable to viruses?

I can't confirm or deny what the other guy said above about the game and Direct X [v.8], but I will tell you that Parallels [or VMWare or Boot Camp, for that matter] will make you susceptible to [windows] viruses. What you're essentially doing is running faux Windows machine with Parallels. Think about it this way, just as it can run your Windows game, it can run any other Windows software, including viruses/spyware/adware. You can reduce your risk by limiting online activities to your Mac though. You might even prohibit Windows from any network communication.

On the other hand, if you're using Boot Camp [which partitions, or divides your hard drive] and get a virus, you're Mac stuff will should theoretically be safe. This is so because Windows [under boot camp] can't read or even see the Mac stuff for technical reasons. Boot Camp might also be a way to run Flight Simulator X with full Direct X [v.8] support. Right now, Boot Camp is a free download from Apple's website. It is beta software so it may have some quirks, hint: BACK UP YOUR STUFF BEFORE YOU INSTALL! http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

The beta status will be knocked off of Boot Camp when Apple releases it as a part of Mac OS X 10.5 [Leopard] this October.

The way out to protect Windows against viruses is not to use your Parallels/Boot Camp partition to surf through the Internet. Use your Mac OS browser and everything will be fine. If you are going to use Parallels only for one game only, you won't be vulnerable to viruses at all. In any case your Mac partition will never get infected.

In addition, if you use Parallels with a browser to access the internet, you can get a virus on the Windows side. You would need to get an anti-virus application for the Windows partition. The Mac side would stay fine.
