The Metropolitan Museum is amazing for all ages and if you want to see some trippy modern art, head to MoMA.

Do NOT go to the Empire State Building, i took my friend there who is from DC and wanted to do some touristy stuff but we waited in line for 2 hours and the views werent even that amazing. Plus all the german tourists had the worst b.o. and it cost 20$

Theres also great shopping at midtown by Fifth Ave. and getting lost in central park is a lot of fun. Some trendy shops are in SoHo and the Village...and there are a shitload of museums

It isn't really cheap, but the greatest thing I've ever done is going to the statue of liberty and Ellis Island, also if you purchase your statue of liberty tickets on line prior to your visit you can guarantee entrance to the statue. Maybe you can get a student or bulk discount. It is fabulous. My friends said the museums are free on Fridays. I also recomend walking through central park. There is a lot of stuff to do there too. Also just go for a cab ride, and ask the cabby questions. I found this to be very interesting. You can also go to the A&E website, they have a lot of NY information there. Just walking down the streets can be fun for someone who don't normally get to do this.
