I have a Kia Sportage, 4 cyl. The dang thing is only getting 15 mpg. What the heck could be wrong, there are no other problems. I'm calling a mechanic tomorrow, I just thought I'd see if any of you knew. Thanks.

I didn't realize Kias were such bad vehicles. I always heard good stuff about them, but I'm not happy with mine at all. The gas mileage is a joke.

You are cheated by the look of the car - that is what the Korean like to do when they spotted the market trend, be it Hyundai, or KIA (anyway these two companies are under the same boss).

The Korean engine is famous for heavy fuel consumption, look at the Getz, a 1.3 litre car, lucky to get 12 Km per litre, as compare to any Japanese made 1.3 litre cars of at least 15 to 20 km per litre!

Thes engines are normally good for the 3 years only, lot of maintenance needed.....so get rid of it when time is up...

Good Luck!

Have you made a tune-up lately or never? the first thing to check would be spark plugs and wires, then oil change, tire inflation, intake air filter, and transmission and differential oils.
If none of this works see answer above.

What year is it. Mine is a 2005 Rio Kia and it hasn't given me any problems as of yet.

Have you checked the breather filter? A dirty air filter will drop the MPG drastically. My pickup went from 25 down to 17 and allI did to correct it was change the filter.

There are lots of potential problems: burned oil, old spark plugs, dirty air filter, under inflated tires, the list goes on.

it could be number of things. hole your tank. engine needs retiming. gear ratio set wrong. It is important to get a second mechanics opinion though. especially if you dont know much about cars. look up one those books for dummies.
