The snails will reproduce becuase they are hermaphrodites, they aren't harmful to your fish or water, but will eat lots of the plants (if not all). Which will then in turn cause either
a) You having to buy more plants or b) An increased nitrate level because of the lack of the plants which helps reduce it naturally.
The Snails eggs look like tiny little jelly balls, some fish will eat the eggs aswell as the snails. Such as most types of loaches, particularly clown loaches. Anyways, good luck with you snail problem!

Get a clown loach. They eat snails. I have a snail colony in my tank, and I never have to feed the loach! He loves it.

Allysa has a good idea, but if your tank is large enough, it's good to have several Clown Loaches, because they are schooling fish, and will do and feel better in a group.

well one time I had about 4 snails and they put their eggs everwhere and got my other fish sick and most of them died from the dirt of the snails.I had to end up cleaning my whole tank out to get rid of all of the eggs and mess the snails made.Thats my experience with snails and I will never do it again...

Same thing happened to me. They didn't seem to affect the environment of the tank and actually helped get rid of some algae. Maybe check this website though if you want to get rid of them:
