correction!
I don't have a router, never will.
I only go from the wall outlet to my cable modem, then cat5e to my pc.

The reason why you have only a 100MB/s network connection between your computer and the modem is because the modems ethernet port can only go upto 100MB/s. You can only go as fast as the slowest port.

Well the ambit modem probably only supports 10/100 ethernet... and since it is connecting to the internet WAY slower than that it didn't need to be 1000.

Regaurdless of your local network speed the internet will not be 1000MBPS or even 100MBPS very rare to have 10mbps unless you have FIOS which would be 20 if available or bonded multiple lines from the cable company.

ensure your router connects at gigabit. But even if it does - cable modems are not gigabit speeds. They only work at about 360K or so. But your 100Mbps will be enough. You won't really see much difference in switching to gigabit router.
