I have a 97 1 ton with 6.5 diesel that will not run right. It will start and run but then it will die. After it dies it may not start back up for a while. I think there is something wrong with the kill switch. Does anyone else have any other ideas?

Take it from a "REAL" GM tech listen to G-man sounds like a fuel filter problem and usually when the kill switch goes bad on the 96' 97' 98''s they keep running or will not run at all

It sounds like you have water in you fuel.....diesel fuel is lighter then water. When you first start it it runs on the clean fuel in the top of the fuel filter. It fires and runs off the clean fuel in the top of the filter. As the fuel/water from the tank comes into the filter it stalls the engine. If you wait awhile the water settles to the bottom of the filter and you start the process all over again.

I'm assuming we are talking about a 1/2 ton pick up, (c1500) so you have replaced the fuel pump, put a fuel Gage back on the rail and turn the key to the run position, wait for the fuel pump to quit, and watch the Gage to see if your holding fuel pressure for at least a few minutes, you may loosing pressure back into the tank causing this condition, if so it could be a leaky fuel injector or a leaky fuel pulse dampener P.S. nether the fuel pump nor the pressure regulator control the holding of the fuel pressure, so DO NOT look for these as potentials for the lost of ability to hold pressure, If your not sure how things work, don't give out advise, duh ten year dealer tech, ase master tech

you need to try changing the fuel filter on it diesel filters get dirty twice as fast as a gas filter does,if this doesn't help it you may need a new ignition switch in it,those are notorious for going bad in Chevy diesels ,i think the filter will help it though.good luck with it hope this helps.

Change the fuel filter.

Diesels are notorious for getting clogged fuel filters, since there's all kinds of junk in diesel fuel.

could it not be any thing to do with a cold start device not sure how they work on the modern stuff but sounds possible it gets warm and turns it off and will restart when it cools again look in that direction cant see why a blocked filter would let it start and then stop and allow it to restart when cold again it sounds more like a prob with what ive said but like ii say not sure how the electics work on modern motors

Check also and see if the lift pump is running. It supplies(lifts) the fuel to the injection. Be sure to fill the new filter(s) with new fuel.

No, just the usual. Check the spark plugs if you have them, the fuel and air filters.
