a question about tv tuner in my laptop?

if i buy a tv tuner for my laptop and i want to record a show that is air late at night do i have to leave my laptop on or can i record the show with the laptop off?

My desktop is my TIVO. The computer can be in STANDBY, but not off or hibernating. As long as the show is programmed to record, it will during standby.

you need to leave the laptop on to record things at all

no the laptop would have to be on
