It's been said to be about drugs, but the band maintains that it's the crazy trip of celebrity. It can be difficult to survive sudden stardom intact.

The lyrics of the song describe the title establishment, a hotel where "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave." On the surface, the song is a tale of a weary traveler who becomes trapped in a nightmarish hotel that at first appeared tempting. There are many urban legends about the meaning of this metaphor (see Lyrics Interpretations below). The song was written about the hedonism and self-destruction in the Southern California music industry. [1]

You will have to listen to the lyrics closely, the song hotel California is about a satanic church in California for example:
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven't had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say
It just so happens that in 1969 was the death of Alastair Crowley a satanic high priest as i am told that is what the reference for 1969 means.
