You can get out if you want to. That's why it's called a VOLUNTEER ARMY. But it's easier to get out while still in boot camp. If you decide to leave while in boot camp. Be prepared though. They do NOT like it at all.. and will make the rest of your time there a living hell. But you will get a General Discharge. Meaning...it's not good or bad. Cause Technically...you where not recognized by the government yet. That doesn't happen for about 6 months....or after boot camp..forget which one it is. First ... you have to set up an appointment with your Lea son..talk to him...then talk to your Drill Sargent...then you talk to your Captain...then you talk to your Kernel. He has the final say so. But you can get out of the army if you've already been in it for a while. but it's a long and drug out process. It's not something you can just walk away from the next day. If you just up and leave without doing it properly. Yes..you can go to jail. They call it AWALL....and will put you in front of a military court of law to determine your punishment.

I love these old sea stories; I was stationed in New London, CT when this occurred. An E-5 (machinist mate) showed up one day at his command. He was smoking a joint and drinking a wine cooler. His first class could not believe what he saw and summoned the senior chief. The senior chief inquired, quite forcefully, if he had lost his mind and what did he think he was doing. The second class, using scatalogical langauge, told the senior chief where to go. This brought out the Warrant Officer. The second class attempted to punch the warrant (the warrant was tedious, but I would have hit the senior chief myself) and things went downhill from there. The father-in-law of the second class had told him that he should get out of the military anyway that he could. He had a job for him that paid about $80,000 a year (1980 dollars). The father-in-law said that he would cover any fines or other costs from the discharge. At Captains Mast the second got what he wanted; a discharge, a bad conduct discharge and six months of confinement in New Hampshire at the Navy brig. I guess he got more than he wanted.

After you join the Army you can not get out at any time. Yes there might be a few ways to get out but I do not suggest them. The only good discharge are Honorable of course and medical is kinda good since it can't be helped. So the only real answer is no a soldier can not decide they want to get out and it happens. If one of the other discharges are obtained it will be a lot harder to get a job when he would want to.

Once you sign that contract your obligated to full fill it. Unless you have a legit reason and it's signed off, like wife/husband/Mom/Dad needs you to stay home and care for them.Officers can give up their commission early or quit if you will ( with permission, but it can ruin their future) but not the enlisted men. They will get arrested for being AWOL (absent with out leave) and go to prison, and their very stiff on that sort of thing, especially during war time.

Lol, ahh, no you can't leave when you want to. It's against the law. Tell him to bite the bullet, it's only two years, he's a big boy he can handle it.
My advice would also be not to let his fellow soldiers know he wants to go home early.

GO ARMY...HOOAH

Normally the military has you sign a contract...so unless they say you can leave early you can't. If you do, then yes it is possible someone could go to jail.
