They said that the a/c system outside was tired out and that they were going to replace the compressor and with it came a new themostat. Does this mean that I am getting a new a/c unit outside? Mine right now is like ancient. My apt does not cool down at all and is humid. Also, earlier today I set my thermostat at 80 bc I left. I returned 8 hrs later and my a/c had been running ALL DAY and my thermostat said it was 78?! I have a clock that also tells the temp and its under a fan in my living room...It said that it was 86 degrees. I told maintanance and thats when they came and looked at it again (yesterday they cleaned it out). They said they were going to replace the thermostat but after looking at it again they said the compressor too. I dont know anything about this stuff. Will replacing the compressor help? Is the compressor the big unit outside?

They just cleaned it out yesterday, not much difference. Brand new filter was put in it when I moved in 3 days ago. I am going to have to pay this crazy electric bill, which is why I am trying to get it fixed ASAP so it won't be worse!! (right now, I only will have 3 days with it running non stop but STILL!! $$$)
Also, freon was fine. They checked it. It is not an older apartment, but the unit itself is ancient. The outside unit was blowing cool air out the other day instead of warm, which isn't normal. Now it is blowing slightly warm, but not like it is supposed to!!

Are you sure they didn't say condensor instead of compressor? compressors don't normally come with a thermostat. The condensor is the "big unit outside". The compressor is a major component of the condensor. If you're not sure what you're getting ask more questions until you are sure. If the condensor (outside unit) is ancient, you'll probably pay a lot to get just a replacement compressor for it. You could use that money toward the price of a new condensor. Also, since the unit is "ancient" they may even have a hard time getting a replacement compressor and you could be without a/c days or weeks. With the new condensor you'll get better efficency ( read that as using less electricity). It may be worth the difference in a repair vs a replacement.

They would not replace the compressor unless they knew without doubt that it was faulty. The compressor is the most expensive single part in the A/C system so this decision is not done lightly.
A faulty compressor can be responsible for a drop and consequent loss of cooling ability.
You are quite fortunate that you will not be receiving the bill for this lot. Some people weigh up the pros and cons of replacing a compressor with replacing the entire system with the age of the machine being the deciding factor.
Anyway, good luck with the repair.

If they give you a compressor that is probably worth $1000 do not discourage them from doing it. The compressor has refrigerant under pressure. When it is worn out and leaky that essential refrigerant is lost (heading up to ozone layer this very minute). That is the usual fix for the leak problem (and they might have to throw in another $500 of refrigerant filled tubing to be sure).

The compressor is the part that squeezes the freon, thus allowing it to expand and cool...this should make your unit work again, assuming there are no other issues.
