This just makes no sense to me. Maybe for baking...but still kind of unsure...

I just don't get why there is a vent coming out of my oven that just seems to let the heat escape right out...(It has even melted plastic on me a couple of times). In my last apartment, there was a hole/vent under the back left burner that let heat out. In this one, it is right in the rear center.

Can I cover these up with something? What is the point????

That is to let out steam that may develop in the oven while you are baking All the ovens have that (most under a burner).

My electric stove has a vent thru a rear burner...it's designed to help with air circulation inside the oven itself, so don't cover it! Those clever folks who design stoves have had generations' worth of experimentation and if they put in a vent, they hoped you'd leave it alone! p.s., none of the heat that escapes from the vent is 'wasted'...consider it a kind of necessary overflow that helps the oven work right.

the vent is for air circulation to even out the heat inside your oven. if you cover the vent, then it only becomes hotter near the electric coil of your electric oven.

vents are also use for the water vapor & specially smoke (some oils/ food parcels from previous cooking maybe left and burnt which cause smoke) to scape from the oven so not to spoil the what you are cooking. you dont want your cake to smell turkey :))

Your range is gas powered, not electric. Burning fuel must exhaust and have a ready supply of oxygen. If you block the vent, you will block the flow of air, diminishing or extinguishing the flame. You really want to leave those vents open and clean.
