I think my goldfish is afraid of the light on his new tank. His old tank didn't have a light and now any time I turn the light on, he goes and hides behind a plant. Is it possible for a fish to be afraid of the lights? He isn't afraid of the filter...

Hi Emily, He's probably not scared of it, just not used to it yet & it makes him jump. Animals enjoy set routines & as your previous tank had no light he is just not used to one yet, coupled with the fact that he is in a new environment.

Goldfish don't actually need lights on in their tanks-they are fine with just the daylight or room lighting illuminating their tanks-the lights are primarily for our viewing benefit although if you have real plants the lights are very necessary then. I would suggest you only put his light on for 10 minutes or so each day to start with & then only when it is already light in the room so the change won't be very great from his point of view. Once he is comfortable with this increase it to a couple of hours each day & so on untill you have the light on when you want it-he will soon get used to it & accept it as normal. Once you & he are happy set the light on a timer & he will have a familiar routine.

Sounds like photo-shock. Turn on the room lights for a while before turning on the tank light.

Have you seen the movie Aquamarine? If you did, remember the scene when Aquamarine told the girl that her fish didn't come out of hiding because of the light. then she turned it off and it came out. so yeah, i guess fish can be afraid of light. maybe try keeping the light off.

Maybe you need to put some make-up on before you turn on the light ?

Sorry....seemed funny before I typed it, and my backspace button is too far away to reach, so it stays.
