The three types of clouds are:

Cumulus - white, puffy, vertical
Stratus - flat, drab, hazy
Cirrus - streaky, linear, high altitude

Two additional descriptors are:

Alto- high altitude
Nimbo - low altitude, voluminous

So, there are actually many cloud types, including nimbostratus, altocumulus, etc.

I was a meteorology student few years back and to tell you the truth there are many types of clouds, its a big big subject and a lot of studies even just for clouds but check the links out below and you will have a fair idea,

Based on heights of the base, you can classify three types.Low cloud,Medium cloud and high cloud.
Low: stratus,stratacumulus,cumulus and cumulonimbus.
Medium: Altostratus and Altocumulus.
High: cirrostratus ,cirrocumulus and cirrus.
