Valid social security number and identification is sold daily in the United States(sometimes as high as $500 a person each month).
I know you said borrow, but I don't know how you would Know when it was returned, and he had eliminated all records and did not use it in a manner that is going to create you problems.
It is easy for him to get a phony drivers license with your name and his picture. Now with your real social security number he has your identification. Hey he may even have already gotten hold of your driver's license number, which will make it even easier. I have seen this done, when someone just happens to have left their wallet elsewhere and borrow your ID to buy alcohol and the copy down the number while buying alcohol.
People use them to work, apply for credit, open bank accounts, and etc.
Consider the numerous down side of this practice. If he should commit a crime with identification--you could have a warrant issued for you. If they worked using your identification, you will have tax problems. If they used your identification to apply for credit and use the credit and did not pay off debts--your credit score at worst will go down.
Consider getting a new friend and watching your credit, and be careful where you leave your wallet.

There is nothing your friend can do with your social security number that is not illegal and that doesn't have the potential to cause you no end to legal problems with the police, banks, credit, government and more.
It better be a joke, because if this person is serious, they are definitely NOT your friend.
