The IRS needs to know and you need to pay the right taxes on it. Some lotteries require that you make it public, its like their best form of advertising, it gets customers for them, its considered a condition of playing. Different lotteries have different rules.

The lottery commission wants your name and city to advertize for more suckers to bet, so you have to follow their rules which says you are to appear in the media.
but why sweat it your chances of winning are 1 in 100 million.
just in case you win, you should move from your state immediately to avoid people like me...."can I borrow a twenty till payday?"

You can choose to remain anyomous, the money can be set up in a blind trust. An attorney can do it for you. The only way someone would know then, was if you told....a very wise man told me that one, and he should know he came into a huemongous amount of money and that is what he did cause he did not want his worthless kids knowing about it...

you can usually set up a trust through a lawyer to keep it publicly secret.
