You can also in the future save it in an rtf format or rich text format. This is a universal format used by practically all word processing software. Do this by going to File then save as. By default it comes up as the *.doc file extension. Use the down arrow to scroll through the many choices you have and you will find the *.rtf file extension. Select it and it may warn you that some formatting maybe lost and to save it as a *.doc but just ignore it. Unless you have some fancy formatting like nested tables and the like you will be ok...
Go see your friend again and this time do the save as...
Good luck on your job hunt!

Definitely go for PDF. Here's how to do it. Click on the link below:
http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp
That is the download page for a free PDF writer. Download the program. In addition you'll probably need a PS2PDF converter. Not a big deal though. There are instructions right there on the page for downloading one.
Once you get everything installed, the program basically works as a printer. So to convert a document to a PDF, you click File > Print and then select "Cute PDF".
I use this program all the time and it works great.
Just be careful emailing though, since you'll be sending it as an attachment. You'll need to check with the employer to see if attached documents are okay with them. No big deal, just check.

Now your discovering why PDF is used for The Portable Document Format (PDF) is the file format created by Adobe Systems, in 1993, for document exchange.
Different versions of Word format differently. Word is susceptible to what fonts the receiver has on his machine. PDF encapsulates the fonts.

If they have Word on there computer it will transfer and show as it was Originally typed, check with a friend to be sure. But unless you have Word on your computer it generates it as a Word Pad Document because you don't have Word. Try it to be sure but I am almost sure I am telling you right.

If you email the Wordpad document, you will receive a Wordpad document, and if you open it with word, it should open with the default font and size (Times New Roman, 12 pt).

If the person you send it to has Word, then they will see it as a Word document.
If they have Word Perfect or some other word processing, it could be messed up.
If you see it in Word Pad, then save it there, you just wiped out all the nice Word formatting stuff.
You might consider getting it into a PDF.
