not all of us think that

Columbus NEVER came to North America, just Central.

That said, I think most Americans know there were Vikings and odder predecessors (Kennewick Man, for example- what was that about?), but Columbus was the first to have an extremely well documented and incontrevertible voyage to the Novus Mundi. He's the first face we can put with the Old World.

Do you mean North Americans specifically? Maybe just those of us in the United States? Surely all of South Americans didn't learn this in elementary school.

I would say most Americans have learned that Christopher Columbus was the first explorer to reach what we call "Puerto Rico". And we also learned that he reached it on accident. Possibly, the texts books have been updated by thispoint in time to reflect that Ponce De Leon was first European on Current 'Continental US; soil.

Only those that believe the misinformed educational system.
It is always a case of alterior motive, I doubt you ever get the truth.
This is like Braveheart, with Mel Gibson.
William Wallce was in fact well over 6ft 6 if you check your History.
A little off point but at what point is anything believable.

nope I was taught Leif Erickson a viking that I believe was exiled for some reason . I was taught that like 15 or so years ago in Jr high and Columbus never set foot on the main land of America he hit the Caribbean Islands. The American Indians were here way before any one but we don't credit them for discovering it although it was already pretty much settled and tamed to their way of life long before we thought of seeing what else was out there but it all depends on the history book you were taught from as to what you'll learn and the content of that isn't always the straight truth but the writers biased opinion on that truth

That has been rewritten; its pretty much fact that the Vikings were here prior to Columbus.

I've heard there was a Chinese expedition making it all the way to what is now San Fransisco in the year 1421.But they didn't leave any strong evidence behind.

Hopefully, most well educated Americans don't.
But hopefully as well, they realize he was the first to change the way Europeans thought.

We don't teach that in school any more. There is too much proof the Vikings were here before that and had a settlement in Canada.

No, we all know the Vikings discovered it before Columbus, and if you believe Thor Heyerdahl, even the ancient Egyptians beat Columbus to the punch. But one thing's for damned sure. When Columbus discovered America, it STAYED discovered!
