Fish do not need bright lights, or even any lights, on their tanks. The only reason to have a lighted tank when you are not there to see it is if you have live plants in the tank. Then you would need to keep the light on for 8-10 hours a day depending on the species of plant.

The Colombian Shark is a fish that enjoys a soft sandy substrate so it can dig around in it. It is a natural digger. If you replace the gravel with sand, it will have an easier time and will not hurt itself. It may also feel insecure because of lack of shelter. Make sure there is rock work and caves and things like that. If it doesn't, it will try to hide in the substrate. Turning off the lights is only a short term solution. You will need to meet the needs of the fish as soon as possible to avoid stress and injury. Good luck!

the light is mostly used to show off your fish and their colors. it wont bother them so long as it's warm for them
