getting the yellow question marks on ethernet drivers,, not on resource cd or on driver disc apparently,, any help greatly appreciated

try uninstalling your Ethernet adapters in windows device manager then rebooting your pc, this may help windows install them properly if you have corrupt drivers or some other installation problem

Reinstallation of Win XP (or any OS) requires that you also immediately install the motherboard chipset driver. Usually the CD includes the drivers of all onboard devices like LAN, VGA, sound, etc. Drivers of other devices on the PCI slots and USB ports follow.

Why are you even using Windows XP? With a Mac you dont need to in install drivers. Everything just works.

well what is your your Ethernet card?

Have you tried using the Network Wizard?
Control Panel > Network Connections folder
if none installed should load the Wizard

something is wrong because windows usually loads
a compatible driver for any type NIC

Is yours an ONBOARD ethernet adapter?
perhaps not turned on in BIOS?

If you know the brand of your motherboard, go to their website and search for the driver. Be sure to get the correct model of your motherboard. By the way, you'll be doing this on another computer as what you've said, you cannot connect to the internet.
